About the Chapter Reports

The class will be organized into 5 teams of 3 – 4 members. Form a team of 3-4 members. Write your names on a piece of paper along with the chapter assigned to you.

Select a chapter to report on: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 11.

Each member should read the chapter thoroughly and search for the important ideas presented there. Look for:

The Big Ideas (Highlights, Useful information)

The Bottom Line (So what should teachers keep in mind?)

Plan for your presentation as a group. Who will cover which portion? Be sure to provide a great coverage for the chapter. Engage your audience and make your presentation interactive through games or thought-provoking questions. Your report as a whole group should not exceed 20 minutes.

Chapter 1 Exploring 21st Century Learning - October 1

Chapter 2 Understanding 21st Century Learners- October 8

Chapter 3 The ASSURE Model - October 15

Chapter 4 Achieving 21st Century Learning Environments - October 22

Chapter 11 Using Multimedia to Engage Learners- October 29

SmartBoards

September 10, 2013
READ: Chapter 11
Using SmartBoards in the Classroom: Textbook page 268.

1. Smart Boards
Scenario: You're a new teacher in a school that is about to buy new SmartBoards. The principal asks you, "You're a recent graduate from FSU. You must know what's the best model to buy!" Which model will you recommend? What are the different models anyway?

(Hint)

2. Smart Notebook Introduction

Smart Notebook is the software you use to create interactive teaching materials for the SmartBoard.

Locate Smart Notebook on your Mac. Use the spotlight (upper right hand corner) to search for it. Type in "Notebook." Launch the program by double clicking on it.

When it first opens, you'll find a tutorial. Go through this tutorial to become familiar with the program. Keep in mind, though, that there are a few tricks that won't work since you are on a desktop and not a SmartBoard. One example is the activity in which you are supposed to "flick" a basketball. Can't do that on your desktop. This module is great for introducing you to SmartNotebook so please be patient and go through this learning material.

Here's the accompanying hand-out for this tutorial:

3. Smart Exchange

SmartExchange is a web site where teachers share SmartBoard resources. There are also several companies that sell high quality resources.
Click on this link to go to Smart Exchange:
http://exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0.
Join for free. Then find a good teacher-made resource. Click on a resource. Go through the pages by clicking the arrow. Evaluate it. You are looking for a resource that is interactive.

Not so good example: Saving at the Supermarket - This is no better than a PowerPoint slide presentation.

Better example: Place Value

Best example: Groundhog Day

4. Creating your own resource

Create your own SmartNotebook resource. Choose a topic and a target grade level.

For your resource, you will need:

1. A first page with title and your name
2. An introduction
3. Lesson presentation pages with sufficient information and interactive elements (3 - 4 pages)
4. A variety of well-designed games (2 - 3 games)
5. A closing page with a reminder for students, e.g. "Keep in mind..."
.

Grading Rubric and Tutorial Hand Outs are available on Blackboard, Assignment 2.

Click here for a quick video tutorial to get you started.

Here's a sample lesson. I'm sure you can do much better than this!
